2010 Kresge Fellowship Program Launched!

Fellowships to be Awarded to 25 Under-resourced Colleges and Universities

Fellowship Program:

The Kresge Fellowship Program within the Advancing Green Building in Higher Education Initiative will provide free registration, accommodations, and travel expenses (up to $2000/fellow) for fellows to attend one national green building-related conference. As part of the program, Second Nature will award fellowships to 25 university executives who will learn the skills and technical information they need to be effective champions for green building at their own under-resourced campuses. (In total 40 fellowships will be awarded within this program, with 15 awarded in 2009.)

Eligibility:

Schools that have received Title III/V designation from the Department of Education are invited to apply. Senior Managers of colleges and university including campus planners, facilities directors, or vice presidents of finance and business are eligible for the fellowships through which they will take part in learning and networking opportunities, such as the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Conference 2010 and U.S. Green Building Council’s Greenbuild Conference 2010.

Timeline:

In 2010, Second Nature will be awarding fellowships to 25 under-resourced institutions.
The application deadline for this program is March 15, 2010.
Final decision will be announced on April 15, 2010.

As part of the Kresge Fellowship Program, the fellows attend green building-related conferences to build on their knowledge, help transmit ideas and lessons of best practices, and prepare them to become strong advocates for green building at their own institutions. The 2009 Fellows are attending one of the following conferences:

  2. Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) Annual International Conference and Idea Marketplace – July 18‐22, 2009, Portland, Oregon
  3. The National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) Annual Meeting 2009 – June 27‐30, 2009, Boston, Massachusetts
  4. ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit 2009 – August 13‐14, 2009, Chicago, Illinois

The Advancing Green Building in Higher Education initiative helped plan and implement pre-conference sessions for the NACUBO and the ACUPCC meetings. Kresge Fellows that chose to attend these conferences also had the opportunity to participate in these pres-conference sessions.

 

Kresge Fellows Gather at Greenbuild

Nine of the 2009 Kresge Fellows are convening for a networking dinner at the Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Phoenix, AZ on November 10-11, 2009.

 

Green Building at Financially Strained Institutions: Models and Resources

This pre-conference session offered participants insights into the financial mechanisms and strategies that colleges and universities can turn to for assistance with their green building projects. Twenty-two participants, including architects, business officers, other representatives from under-resourced institutions, and Second Nature and NACUBO staff members attended this workshop. 

The session began with a tour of the Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, showcasing various green features of one of the first campus green buildings in Massachusetts. This was followed by a lively green building roundtable discussion with presentations by Joseph Steffano (Director of Facilities Management and Engineering Services) from Bunker Hill Community College, Dixie Norris (Vice President of Administration and Finance) from Cape Cod Community College, Andrea Putman (Director of Corporate Partnerships) and Barbara Koneval (Program Associate, Training and Education) from Second Nature.

 

Exploring Green Buildings on Chicago Campuses: Tour and Roundtable

This pre-conference workshop was attended by 25 participants who had the opportunity to explore the financial, socio-cultural and environmental benefits of sustainable building practice. The session began with a Green Building Tour of high performance campus buildings and culminated in a Green Roundtable discussion.

The Green Building Tour was an interactive showcasing of student residential buildings at Saint Xavier University and academic classroom buildings featuring the use of geothermal energy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The tours were guided by sustainability and green building experts who highlighted special sustainable features, green products and green technologies/systems as well as discussed the design and construction processes of these facilities.

The Green Roundtable featured panel of sustainability experts including Paul Matthews (Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management) from Saint Xavier University, James Marshall Eames (Director of University Environmental Sustainability) from Loyola University Chicago, Cynthia Klein-Banai (Associate Chancellor for Sustainability) from University of Illinois at Chicago, and Suzanne Malec-McKenna, the Commissioner of the City of Chicago Department of Environment.
